A zero-kill run in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is entirely possible with three tools — the Mk22 tranquilizer pistol, the Mosin-Nagant tranquilizer rifle and CQC knockouts — plus one hard rule: never leave an unconscious body where it can fall or drown. Every mission, including all seven boss fights and the bike chase, can be cleared without logging a single enemy death, but the tally is cumulative for the whole save file, so one stray kill in the final hour undoes everything before it.
The guide below is a route, not a checklist: it covers the nonlethal toolkit, the mechanics that secretly log kills, a mission-by-mission path, and the save points worth using before you take a risk.

The nonlethal toolkit and what each tool is actually for
Snake carries lethal gear by default — the M1911A1, frag grenades, claymores, TNT and the combat knife. Leave all of it holstered for the entire run. According to the in-game weapon descriptions, only a small set of items resolve a takedown without adding to the kill count.
| Tool | Capacity | How it drops a target | Best used for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mk22 tranquilizer pistol | 8-round magazine, suppressed | Drains stamina; target sleeps | Almost everything — guards, dogs, most boss stamina bars | Darts have travel time and drop off at distance |
| Mosin-Nagant tranquilizer rifle | 5-round internal magazine, suppressed, scoped | Drains stamina at long range | The End, rooftop and bridge sentries, long sightlines | Bolt cycle between shots; only obtained after The End |
| CQC (choke hold / throw) | Unlimited | Knockout | Guards you can reach without being seen | Holding the choke too long becomes a neck snap — a kill |
| Stun grenade | Carry-limited | Area knockout | Clustered guards, the Ocelot Unit encounter | Loud; expect an alert phase right after |
| EZ Gun | Unlimited ammo, nonlethal | Drains stamina | Low-difficulty practice runs | Only issued on the easier difficulty settings |
Everything else — the knife, frag grenades, claymores, C4, the mounted guns on vehicles, and the lethal pistols and rifles you pick up from guards — will log a kill if it finishes an enemy.
Five ways a clean run quietly breaks
Most failed no-kill runs don’t end in a firefight. They end in one of these:
- CQC held too long. The choke hold has two outcomes. Release at the knockout prompt and the guard sleeps; hold past it and Snake snaps the neck. Practise the timing on an early, low-risk guard in Dremuchij before you rely on it.
- Unconscious bodies in water. A tranquilized or knocked-out guard who ends up in deep water can drown, and the game records that as your kill. Same for a guard dropped off a ledge or a bridge. Drag bodies inland, or tranq guards before they reach the waterline.
- Vehicles and mounted weapons. The bike chase is the single biggest threat to a finished run. The mounted gun on the bike is lethal, and every pursuer it kills is counted. Use the Mk22 from the back of the bike instead.
- Environmental chain reactions. Explosive barrels, fuel drums and collapsing structures kill anything nearby. If a guard is standing next to one when you shoot it, that death is yours.
- Killing a boss with health damage. Bosses are the exception worth understanding: draining a boss’s stamina bar is nonlethal; draining the health bar is a kill. Watch which bar you’re emptying — the stamina bar sits above the health bar on the boss HUD.
Working out how many darts you need
The Mk22 holds eight darts per magazine, so plan a corridor before you walk into it. A typical early stretch — say six guards between two areas — needs two darts per guard: one to put him down, one to cover a miss or a wake-up. That’s 12 darts, or a magazine and a half. On the harder difficulty settings darts are scarcer and guards wake faster, so the same corridor can consume three magazines. Carry a spare stack and tranq from cover rather than in the open.
Mission-by-mission route
Virtuous Mission
You start with the Mk22 already in inventory, which makes the opening the easiest place to learn the tools. Move through Dremuchij South and North on the treeline, dropping the two patrolling guards with single darts each. At Dolinovodno, the rope bridge is the risk point — tranq the sentry before he steps onto the bridge, because a sleeping guard on a bridge can fall. At Rassvet, the Ocelot Unit encounter is the first place a stun grenade earns its slot: a single stun drops the cluster, and you can walk past. Sokolov’s escort is scripted and requires no kills at all.
Snake Eater: Dremuchij to Rassvet
This is the longest stealth stretch and the one most players restart. Dogs are the problem here — they detect by scent and can’t be talked down, so tranq them first, before the human guards. At the swamp, stay on the raised paths: guards you put to sleep near the water are the ones who drown. Rassvet’s warehouse can be cleared entirely from the upper walkway with the Mk22, which keeps you out of CQC range and out of alert range.
Bolshaya Past and Graniny Gorki
The cave sequence before The Pain is linear and quiet. Graniny Gorki’s lab has guards who patrol in pairs; wait for the split, drop the trailing guard, then the leader. Don’t touch the explosive crates in the storage rooms — the blast radius reaches patrolling guards.
Svyatogornyj and Krasnogorje
The Fear is the first boss where the stamina bar matters more than positioning: he drains his own stamina by eating, so letting him feed works in your favour. The Sokrovenno forest leading to The End has three sub-areas and long sightlines — this is where the Mosin-Nagant would help, except you don’t have it yet. Tranq The End with the Mk22 at medium range; his stamina kill is what hands you the Mosin-Nagant for the rest of the run.
Groznyj Grad
Raikov must be knocked out, not killed — a CQC choke, released on the prompt, then take the uniform. The Fury is fought in a confined space where splash damage from his flamethrower is the real threat; keep moving and use the Mk22 between his passes. Volgin is a stamina fight and a long one: his electricity attack has a wind-up you can read, and the Mk22 works on him throughout. After the torture sequence, The Sorrow’s river is empty of the dead on a clean run — nothing to do but walk.
Escape, Shagohod and Rokovoj Bereg
The bike chase is where finished runs die. Stay on the Mk22 and don’t touch the mounted gun. The Shagohod is a machine, so destroying it does not count as a kill — use whatever you like. At Rokovoj Bereg, The Boss is defeated by draining her stamina, which is best done with CQC counters plus Mk22 darts between her charges.
Boss-by-boss nonlethal methods
| Boss | Nonlethal method | Reward for a stamina defeat |
|---|---|---|
| Ocelot | Mk22 darts; CQC counter after his reload | Camouflage reward |
| The Pain | Mk22 once his hornet swarm is dispersed | Hornet Stripe camouflage |
| The Fear | Mk22 while he feeds; let him drain his own stamina | Spider camouflage |
| The End | Mk22 at medium range across Sokrovenno | Moss camouflage and the Mosin-Nagant |
| The Fury | Mk22 between flamethrower passes | Fire camouflage |
| Volgin | Mk22 stamina damage through the whole fight | Camouflage reward |
| Shagohod | No restriction — a machine, not a person | None |
| The Boss | CQC counters plus Mk22 darts | Camouflage reward |
Alerts, checkpoints and how to protect the run
An alert phase itself doesn’t break a zero-kill run — kills do. But alerts are where kills happen, because you panic, switch to a lethal weapon and fire. Two habits fix that: bind the Mk22 as your default equipped weapon, and break line of sight rather than fight. Guards lose you after a short search if you move to a different area.
On checkpoints: the results screen at the end of a mission shows your tally, which is the only reliable confirmation that a segment was clean. Save from the pause menu at every area transition, and always save immediately before a boss stamina fight and before the bike chase. If a segment goes wrong, reloading the previous save costs a few minutes; discovering the mistake at the results screen costs the whole run. On the harder difficulty settings, save more often — darts are scarcer and guards wake faster, so a clean corridor on Normal can become a kill corridor on the top tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does knocking out a guard with CQC count as a kill?
No. A CQC choke released at the knockout prompt is nonlethal, as are CQC throws. The kill only happens if you hold the choke past the prompt and Snake snaps the neck — listen for the change in the guard’s struggle and release early rather than late.
Can I still get the top rank if I kill someone during the bike chase?
No. The kill tally accumulates across the entire save file, and the rank requirements are evaluated at the end of the game. A kill during the bike chase — including kills made by the mounted gun you didn’t personally aim — counts the same as a kill in the first area.
Is the EZ Gun available on every difficulty?
No. The EZ Gun is issued on the easier difficulty settings, where it provides unlimited nonlethal ammunition. On the higher tiers you rely on the Mk22 and Mosin-Nagant, both of which have finite ammo, which is why dart budgeting matters more as difficulty rises.
What happens if I tranquilize a guard and he falls into the water?
He can drown, and the game logs that as a kill attributed to you. The same applies to unconscious guards dropped from ledges or bridges. Tranq guards before they reach water or heights, and drag sleeping bodies away from edges when you can do it safely.
Do I have to fight The End, or can I skip him?
You can skip the fight by letting him die of old age, but that denies you the Mosin-Nagant, which is the best nonlethal tool for the second half of the game. For a clean run, fight him and drain his stamina — the Moss camouflage and the rifle are both worth the time.
Do bosses count toward the kill tally?
Only if you finish them with health damage. Every human boss has both a health bar and a stamina bar; emptying the stamina bar is a nonlethal defeat. The Shagohod is a machine and is exempt entirely, so you can destroy it with any weapon you like.
